Cannabis products can be purchased in a number of different style packages, such as tin cans, tubes, bags, and plastic or glass jars. Even though there are several styles, there is one universal rule cannabis companies must follow; this is to make sure the product packaging is child-proof. However, when it comes to the proper storage of cannabis, which option is best?
A lot of Licensed Producers opt for the bag option; it’s lightweight and can reduce shipping costs, while (most of the time) being recyclable. Glass containers may be more optimal for bud protection, but it is also going to cost the company and the consumer a lot more money.
So, does it matter how you store your cannabis?
Proper storage of cannabis will make a huge difference in the quality of the flower you smoke. Everything from the taste, smell and overall effects of the strain will be impacted by how it is stored. Too much air can cause the oxidation of terpenes, cannabinoids and other plant chemicals, and too much moisture can lead to mould.
Important Factors in Cannabis Storage
- Darkness: UV rays can break down the precious cannabinoids and terpenes in your buds. Keep your flower in a dark place where it cannot be reached by sunlight (ie; blacked out jar).
- Cleanliness: Make sure you store your cannabis in a clean vessel that is free from bacteria and mould.
- Temperature: Keeping your cannabis in a cooler place can help prevent the flower from drying out. Be careful not to let it get too cold (i.e. Freezer) because the trichomes may burst and your bud will lose potency.
- Humidity: Typically, you want to store your bud between 55% – 65% relative humidity (RH). This will help maintain the components of your bud while preventing the growth of bacteria and mould.
