One of the best ways to describe Lana Kamaric’s art is cosmic surrealism. Her inspiration stems from nature, science and a love for all things metaphysical. Her talent showcases movement, where she combines bright colours to conjure up images that provoke thoughtful inquiry into the universe (and beyond).
Being a painter is the only thing that Lana has ever wanted to do. She had known since childhood that this was her journey, so for years she practiced and learned skills to perfect her craft. While she did study Art History in University, Lana felt traditional training was too narrow-minded and did not fit well with her need to experiment with new techniques. A professional painter since 2014, she continues to learn and recreate her techniques with each year.
“I’m a self-taught painter, but I did study art history in university and took some painting classes while there. I’ve learned that I’m a much better student when left alone to learn on my own terms. Art school teaches you to pick a niche and perfect it, but there are just so many fun styles to play with and experiment with. I get bored of doing the same thing over and over again. I definitely have recurring themes in my work but my style usually changes as soon as it starts to stagnate.”
Lana has lived in Burlington for the last twenty years. As a huge fan of the waterfront, she says she is continuously inspired by the community here. Whether there are musicians playing along the promenade or other artists painting, it brings a unique sense of community that motivates her artwork. In the warmer months, you can often find Lana painting watercolours in Spencer Smith Park… (and I mean, who could blame her?)
Like many of us, Lana loves to use cannabis when she creates. As someone with an overactive mind, she finds cannabis helpful for filtering out the noise and helping her focus. She reaches for more energizing strains to center herself without becoming too sleepy. A true artist, Lana prefers the ritual of rolling; to craft and create with her hands.
Lana’s work tends to stick to similar themes, but her style is ever-changing. Lately, she’s been exploring identity and what it’s like to be human. Her painting style ranges with the use of watercolours, oil, acrylic, mixed media, and more. To Lana, art is more than a job, it is a form of communication and expression. She believes anyone can be an artist; talent only gives you a head start, the rest is practice and dedication.
“I love painting because I find it so much easier to express what I’m trying to say. Words are complicated and constantly changing and it takes too long to articulate thoughts. With one image I can express layers upon layers of ideas. Visual art is a universal language.” – Lana
Outside of painting, Lana loves to dance, write, and play a little guitar. She loves being in nature, spending time on the beach, or hiking anywhere with a lot of trees. In the winter, she prefers to stay indoors; admitting that’s when she paints the most. Over the last two years, she has explored the art of making videos and finding other unique ways to showcase her talent.
