Growing for Beginners

Growing cannabis can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Spending time with nature, your hands in the earth, and watching a little seedling develop into a full-blown plant gives a great feeling. Cannabis is a weed and should be fairly easy to grow, but if you want to have your plant perform to its fullest, you’ll want to take its environment into consideration.

Lighting

Lights are important because your plant will convert light energy into chemical energy that will allow it to grow. When growing indoors, you want your lights to mimic the sun as closely as possible. Typically, indoor tents will require one to two lights depending on how many plants you wish to grow. Some growers will have a particular room for vegetation and another for flowering; these growers will need at least two different lights. Using a timer switch, you’ll want to set the particular light cycle for your plant depending on which stage of growth it is in. For vegetative, your plants will want between 18-24 hours of light, and for flowering 12 hours of light, along with 12 hours of darkness. Lights can range dramatically in price, so make sure to do your research and consider your budget.

Hydration & Humidity

Water is a key element of growth for your cannabis plants. You want to make sure the plants have enough humidity in the air and moisture in the soil. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes new growers can make, but it’s also important to make sure to not underwater them too. In the beginning, avoid watering with too heavy of a stream to avoid knocking the plant over. As the plant gets bigger, widen the circle in which you water, to ensure all the roots get covered. You’ll also want to make sure you have proper water drainage. Humidity will change depending on the stage of growth your plant is in. Seedlings and clones like to sit in about 65-70% humidity, vegetation 40-70%, and flowering 40-50%.

Nutrients

To grow high-quality cannabis, you want to make sure your plants are fed well. The macronutrients you’ll want to pay most attention to are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). The micronutrients include Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe), and Copper (Cu). You’ll also want to make sure your plant is getting enough Carbon (C), Oxygen (O), and Hydrogen (H). Cannabis plants will require different levels of nutrients in their different stages, so you may want to get a 3-stage plant nutrient system, such as Advanced Nutrients to ensure they are getting exactly what they need.

Air Flow

When attempting to recreate a natural environment, we can’t forget about the wind. Airflow is a key element while growing cannabis plants. It is an important factor in the strength of the plant, to shield against pests and mold, and manage heat and humidity levels. The easiest way to create airflow would be to place multiple fans in a grow space. Now, if you have a bigger budget, you may consider an exhaust system. An exhaust system will not only help move the air around but will also constantly cycle new air in and old air out.
