Different Consumption Methods of Cannabis

When you think of stoners, you probably picture them smoking a joint or ripping a bong. Your mind may even correlate the term with *special brownies*, but there are actually quite a few different ways to consume cannabis. Let’s take a look at some of the options currently available…

Inhalation

Smoking and vaping are two of the most common ways to consume cannabis. When you inhale cannabis all the different active components of the plant travel through the lungs, into the bloodstream and finally to the endocannabinoid system. The effects of inhalation are usually instantaneous.

When it comes to smoking, the user will require an accessory such as rolling papers, a bong, a pipe, and/or a one-hitter (A metal cigarette-like device). The heat from the lighter causes the cannabis flower to combust and turn the inactive THCA phytochemical into active THC.

Vaping, however, will require a vaporizer with a flower and/or concentrate oven. The device will heat up the flower/ concentrate to just below the point of combustion. This allows for the active components to transform into vapour, which is then inhaled. Many find vaping to be the least irritable to the throat and the most discreet smoking method.

THC Distillate & Resin Carts

Cannabis cartridges are a newer way to consume cannabis. They usually involve attaching a small glass cartridge filled with a THC distillate and/or a live resin/rosin concentrate. The battery is utilized to heat the oil into vapour which the consumer then inhales. This method is relatively discreet and leaves little to no smell.

Edibles

Edibles are an excellent option for those who do not want to smoke. When cannabis is consumed in the form of food or a beverage, it first travels through the digestive tract. Once ingested, edibles can have a delayed onset up to around 4 hours and can have a lasting high for 8-12 hours. Experiences will vary with each individual with different reactions to the different edibles they consume, so it’s best to slowly get to know how you will feel in a safe space.

Capsules/ Oils

Capsules are available in microdoses to 10mg doses. Like edibles, they travel through the digestive tract and are absorbed into the bloodstream. Many people like capsules as they are discreet and contain no added sugar. Oils are great for those who are looking for a stronger dose. Some oil formulations suggest swallowing the oil while others are made in a sublingual format to be absorbed under the tongue. In Ontario, you can find oils up to 30mg/ml in dosage. Consumers should start slow and get to know how the product makes them feel before diving in too deep.

Dabbing

Dabbing is the process of vaporizing cannabis concentrates. The chosen concentrate is placed into a heated glass banger (545-570 F), which vaporizes the cannabinoids, terpenes, etc. To do so, one will need specific equipment including a dab rig, torch and a “nail.”

Topical

Topical products allow one to absorb cannabinoids through the skin. Most individuals do not find they get any sort of a high from a topical application, but these products may be helpful for those looking to improve skin health, reduce inflammatory pain or care for an injury, such as a sunburn.
